What is a Greenway?
A Greenway is a means of connecting isolated natural habitats for beneficial native species.
Did You Know?
The forests and wetlands in New London and Waterford act as a filter for water flowing into Long Island Sound. The New London-Waterford Greenway includes the watershed that drains directly into the Thames (the eastern half of New London), or into Alewife Cove, located between Ocean Beach and Waterford Beach. Healthier coastal forests and wetlands means cleaner water at our beaches.
Why does what I do on my property matter?
There are several healthy natural habitats in New London and Waterford but many of them are isolated. By connecting these habitats we create a much larger habitat area that is healthier and more bio-diverse, and acts as a better filtering mechanism for water entering Long Island Sound. These areas also act as a “carbon sink”, absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and sequestering it in biomass. This will be a regional financial asset, especially when carbon credit trading becomes more prevalent.
